Save Money on Gas: The Diva’s Thursday Secret

Professional gas station pump and fuel price board in natural daylight

Hello, my darling divas and savvy spenders! Let’s have a little heart-to-heart, shall we?

We’ve all been there, staring at that flickering digital sign at the corner station, watching the numbers climb. It’s enough to make even the most composed queen want to clutch her pearls in panic!

Gas prices are a pain in the pump, and learning how to save money on gas is the ultimate way to protect your fun-money.

But don’t you worry your fabulous heads! Your girl Patti has been doing some serious soul-searching (and receipt-checking) to figure out how we can keep our tanks full and our wallets even fuller. We already know how to stop wasting food money in 5 easy steps, and we’ve mastered the art of lowering that electric bill. So, it’s high time we tackled the gas-guzzling glutton sitting in your driveway.

Believe it or not, saving money on gas isn’t just about finding the cheapest station in town, though that helps! It’s about a total lifestyle shift that is, wait for it, actually less work for you. Grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of something bubbly, I won’t tell!), and let’s dive into my secret weapon for gas-savings glory.

Confession Time: The Gas-Wasting Whirlwind

Before I give you the goods, I have a confession to make. (It’s okay, we’re in a safe space here!) Not too long ago, I was the queen of the “one-item errand.” I’d realize we were out of almond milk, hop in the car, and zip to the store. Then, two hours later, I’d remember I needed to drop off a dry-cleaning bag. Back into the car! Then, the pharmacy called. Back into the car again!

I was basically using my car as a personal shuttle for my own forgetfulness. I was wasting time, I was wasting energy, and darling, I was hemorrhaging money on fuel. Each of those “cold starts” (when your engine has cooled down completely) actually uses more gas than driving when the engine is already warm. So, my scattered schedule was a recipe for financial disaster.

The Diva Solution: Save Money on Gas with Thursday as My Secret Weapon

So, how did I fix it? I decided to treat my errands like a high-stakes board meeting. I designated one day a week as my official out-of-the-house day. For me, that day is Thursday.

A desk calendar with Thursday circled and a natural cup of coffee on a desk

1. Designate Your “Day of Duty”

Pick one day, any day that works for you, and make it your sacred Errand Day. Whether it’s “To-Do Tuesday” or “Work-it Wednesday,” commit to it. By designating a specific day, you stop the constant “back and forth” that drains your tank.

2. Batch Those Appointments

Here is where the magic happens. I make all my appointments on Thursday. My hair salon? Thursday. The dentist? Thursday. That meeting with the accountant? You guessed it, Thursday! (It makes scheduling so much easier when you can just say, “I only do appointments on Thursdays,” doesn’t it?)

3. Group by Geography

Once my big appointments are set, I look at the map. If my hair salon is on the north side of town, I make sure to hit the grocery store and the post office that are also on the north side. We are aiming for a continuous loop, people! No zig-zagging across town like a confused honeybee. Plan your route so you are making right-hand turns whenever possible (it saves idling time and gas, UPS does it, and so should we!).

The good news: You’ll save a whopping amount on gas.
The even better news: You’ll have six other days of the week where you don’t even have to put on real shoes if you don’t want to! (And we love that for us.)

Maintenance: Don’t Let Your Car Be a Drag

Now, let’s talk about the machine itself. Your car wants to help you save money on gas, but you have to meet it halfway.

Check Your Tire Pressure (The Silent Fuel Thief)

Did you know that driving with under-inflated tires is like trying to run through sand in flip-flops? It’s hard work! When your tires are low, they create more “rolling resistance,” which means your engine has to work harder, and burn more gas, just to keep you moving.

A hand checking tire pressure with a gauge

Check your tire pressure at least once a month. You can find the correct PSI (that’s “pounds per square inch,” for those of us who skipped shop class) on a sticker inside your driver-side door frame. Keeping them at the right level can improve your gas mileage by up to 3%. It doesn’t sound like much, but over a year? That’s a whole lot of extra lattes!

Empty the “Trunk of Shame”

Do you have a set of golf clubs, three bags of “donations” you haven’t dropped off yet, and a case of water rolling around in your trunk? We call that the “Trunk of Shame.”

Every extra 100 pounds in your car can reduce your fuel economy by about 1%. If you’re hauling around unnecessary weight, you’re literally paying extra to move your clutter from place to place.

Clean it out! If it’s not essential for that day’s errands, leave it at home. And while you’re at it, finally empty that trunk of all the heavy extras you’ve been hauling around for no good reason. Your car (and your wallet) will feel so much lighter.

Ditch the Drag Up Top

And, my glittering gas-savers, let’s talk about roof racks. If you’ve got one sitting up there empty, it is still creating wind resistance like a clingy ex creating chaos. Even when you’re not using it, that rack can make your car less aerodynamic and burn more fuel. So if your roof rack, cargo box, or bike rack isn’t actively earning its keep, take it off. Less drag, less gas, less badness. We love an easy win.

Driving Habits: Move Like a Diva, Not a Drag Racer

I know, I know, we’re all busy, but aggressive driving is a total sodium bomb for your budget when you’re trying to save money on gas. I know, I know, we’re all busy, and sometimes we feel the need for speed. But aggressive driving (you know the type: jackrabbit starts and slamming on the brakes) is a total drag for your gas budget. We’re very particular about the kind of drag we encourage at Divas On A Dime.

A car trunk filled with organized grocery bags

Try to maintain a smooth and steady pace. Imagine there’s a delicate, expensive egg under your gas pedal and another one under your brake. You don’t want to crack them!

  • Cruise Control is your BFF: Use it on the highway to keep your speed consistent.
  • Avoid Idling: If you’re waiting for a friend or sitting in a long line at the “bucks,” turn the engine off. Idling for more than 60 seconds burns more gas than restarting the car.

Use Your Tech (Work Smarter, Not Harder)

We live in the future, darling! Use it! There are incredible apps out there designed specifically to help us save money on gas in our immediate vicinity.

A smartphone showing a gas price app

My personal favorite is GasBuddy. It’s like having a personal assistant who scours the neighborhood to find you the best deals. Sometimes driving just one block further can save you ten cents a gallon. When you’re filling a 15-gallon tank, that’s $1.50 back in your pocket. Do that every week, and you’ve just paid for your monthly streaming service!

Also, don’t forget to check your grocery store rewards! Many stores offer gas points when you buy groceries. If you’re already shopping from our Perpetual Pantry List, you’re likely racking up points that can save you 20, 30, or even 50 cents a gallon! (Now that is what I call a “frugal-fabulous” win!)

The Power of Your Own Two Feet

Now here’s a Thursday Errand Day twist that saves gas before you even turn the key: walk what you can.

I know, I know, not every neighborhood is built for a cute little strolling situation. But the good news is this: many of us have something within walking distance of home or work that we’ve been automatically driving to out of habit. The coffee shop. The pharmacy. The post office. The corner store. The library. The park. And those quick little trips are often the sneaky gas-guzzlers because they add up fast.

So take five minutes and do a tiny “what’s nearby?” audit.

Check what’s within walking distance of where you live and where you work. If a place is close enough for a safe, sensible walk, let your own two fabulous feet do the heavy lifting. No parking drama, no pump pain, and no shame if you’re starting small. One walkable errand is still a win, angel cakes.

And if you’re moving, changing jobs, or choosing where to spend your regular time, make walkability one of your deciding factors. Being near the places you use all the time can save you serious money over the long haul. It’s not just a lifestyle perk, it’s a budget strategy. A sassy, sensible, shoe-leather strategy.

Make Public Transportation an Adventure

And let’s give a little love to buses, trains, and subways, shall we? Public transportation doesn’t have to feel like some sad second-place option. Rebrand it, my loves. Turn it into an adventure.

Take the train downtown for date night and pretend you are mysterious, metropolitan, and extremely well-organized. Hop a bus with the kids and make it an excursion for family playtime. Let them people-watch, window-watch, and enjoy the novelty of doing something a little different. Sometimes the ride itself becomes part of the fun, which means you’re not just saving gas, you’re making a memory. Look at us being all practical and precious.

Will public transit work for every single trip? Of course not. But when it does work, it can take a real bite out of your weekly driving. And fewer miles on the car also means less wear and tear, which is a whole other pile of savings.

The Diva’s Closing Thoughts

Saving money on gas doesn’t have to mean trading in your car for a bicycle (unless you want the leg workout, of course!). It’s about being intentional, organized, and just a little bit picky.

By making Thursday your “Errand Day” and following these tips to save money on gas, you’ll be amazed at how much further a tank will take you. We are all about living the good life without breaking the bank, and every penny we save at the pump is a penny we can spend on the things that really matter: like fresh ingredients for a yummy new recipe or a little treat for ourselves.

So, what do you say? Are you ready to join the Thursday Brigade? Let me know in the comments how you plan to save at the pump this week!

Stay fabulous, stay frugal, and keep that tank full!

Period.
